Understanding retinal diseases and developing new therapies requires model systems that adequately represent the relevant aspects of the retina and its diseases. Nevertheless, it is a moral obligation to reduce the suffering of laboratory animals caused by our research and, where possible, to replace animal models with appropriate in vitro models (3R principle: "Reduce, Refine, Replace"). The further development of in-vitro models is of particular interest, especially because of the limitations of mouse models for human retinal diseases. The use of porcine cell and organ cultures and their continuous further development for better reproducibility, availability and better modeling of the in-vivo situation is an important field of research in experimental retinology in Germany, especially considering the availability of and limited ethical concerns about the starting material. In addition, the development of human in-vitro models offers the chance of a better transfer of scientific findings "from bench to bedside", since the problem of transferability between different species does not arise here and the use of patient samples as starting material also promises a better mapping of the pathological mechanisms.
